Using Your Love Of Animals To Start A Business
April 12, 2010 11:36 pm Dogs, Pet animalsOne of the best businesses for someone who loves animals is Pet Sitting and business is booming. This is truly a win-win business as you get to be around animals and the owners can be away from their pets knowing that they are being taken care of in their own surroundings. The pets are probably the biggest winners in this as they get to remain in their own home, with their own belongings and eating their normal food. Probably the best part is that get to go out and play where they normally do.
I know people who have virtually given up on traveling or being away from home for any length of time because they can’t find anyone to take care of their pets. They’ve gone through the relatives, neighbors and pet hotels which leaves many of them no choice but to stay home or take their pets with them. It’s no problem with some pets but others don’t do well when taken away from their familiar home.
This is where pet sitting can come to the rescue in more ways than just pet sitting. Hiring the kid next door to water the plants doesn’t always work out because they forget so you sure don’t want them looking after your pet. The professional pet sitter can not only take care of your pets, but they can look after your house, take care of the yard and in general make your life comfortable when away from home.

Yes, really!
How many of you take your dog to “doggie day care”? I bet there are quite a few. In fact, there are a number of friends at Foster & Smith who take their dogs to some form of “Day Care”! A month or two ago, I began hearing tales of doggie day care and people bringing their pets. I asked around, and got some information on the person they were taking their pets to, and what the cost was. I started noodling this around in my head…Winter is really tough for Mocca, as I have mentioned before. I do my best to walk her on weekends, but I really am not a fan of the cold, so it takes a lot to get me out there! I also do lots of games & playtime inside…but I just feel bad because I know she needs so much more. I had a hard time deciding about whether to bring her to daycare or not.
Part of me says why would I pay somebody else to walk my dog?! I got the dog, she’s my responsibility…Get over the cold already and go take her for a walk at night! Don’t be so wimpy! But, the other part of me says it would be good for her to interact with other dogs; this woman takes them for 2-mile walks! The cost for me was minimal – during Agility season I pay that much for training so why not supplement the winter with the same cost? And so I finally just decided to give it a try and see how it went.
We first went to meet the woman who runs the doggie day care. We visited on a Saturday afternoon: sniffed outside, met a couple other dogs, sniffed inside, got MANY treats, and seemed to have a generally good time. So, I read and signed some papers, and agreed to return Monday morning with Mocca’s updated Rabies vaccination papers. Monday morning I dropped Mocca off for a half day. I have to say I was a little worried when I left her and felt a bit sad. However, I knew she would have a good time and I didn’t need to worry! (I still did, of course). At noon when I picked her up, I could tell she was just HAPPY. Her tail was high, she was smiling, and seemed very relaxed. I can tell when she is anxious, or under-exercised, and this was not that dog! H – A – P – P – Y ! I was told she had a fabulous time, and made extra good friends with some of the dogs. That evening Mocca was much more relaxed for sure, and although still happy enough to play with me at any chance available, she was much less anxious, and was more willing to settle in on her bed or the couch.
I quickly scheduled Mocca for several more appointments at doggie day care! At least this will get us through the tail-end of winter until Agility training starts again (SOON I HOPE!). We have to wait for the field to clear of snow & dry out, but we are getting closer. So to anybody who thinks it might be something they should try: I say give it a chance! If you can afford a bit here or there, your dog will benefit greatly from it. I actually find myself debating between purchasing something I may not really NEED, thinking I could spend that extra bit on day care for Mocca! Be sure to research the person running the doggie day care first, and make sure they are recommended and run a safe facility.

Starting a Dog Grooming Business
Are you thinking about starting a dog grooming business but you wonder if it can be a profitable business?
The challenge most dog groomers face, aside from learning grooming techniques, is learning how to build the business and how to build and grow your pet business…fast
The failure of any business, like dog grooming, is almost always tied to a lack of marketing knowledge or almost no marketing at all!
Therefore, right off the bat you’ve got to understand you need more than a love for dogs to succeed as a dog groomer.
You’ve got to build a business for the long haul by first finding your target audience, keeping them as long-term customers and making sure you they know you are the best there is.
Let your customers know the benefits of bringing their dog to you!
Starting a dog grooming business gives people convenience and allows them more time to do other things, rather than spend their time getting soaked with a hose or in the tub trying to clean the dog themselves.
Another option in order to create this value of convenience is by operating a mobile dog washing business. It doesn’t get more convenient.
You will need specialized equipment and a van, but a way around it is to either have a “pick-up-and deliver” dog grooming service or even better for sake of time (time is money) is to clean their dog “on-site.” Although not always practical and even possible depending on the homeowner and access to things like warm water.
Valuable skills
The National Dog Groomers Association of America certifies groomers who pass a written examination consisting of 400 questions, with a part also testing practical skills.
Understanding animals and how to handle their personalities is a necessity because it’s not as easy as it sounds washing a slippery, wet dog.
Some pet groomers learn their trade by completing an informal apprenticeship, usually lasting 6 to 10 weeks, under the guidance of an experienced groomer.
Another way to get experience is through one of the fifty state-licensed grooming schools throughout the country, with programs varying in length from 4 to 18 weeks.
